Benin City : Outkast meets James Brown

Who are Benin City?

In their own words: Outkast meets James Brown, Benin City are one of the UK’s outstanding new bands, finding beauty, humour and hope even in life’s darkest corners; they engage with the leading themes of the day, including politics, race, religion and sexuality. This brilliant five-piece outfit – featuring the astonishing chemistry of two of the country’s finest spoken word artists, one saxophonist, one drummer, and one electric cellist – fuses funk, folk, drum and bass, hip-hop, Afrobeat, poetry and jazz. We have attracted the attention of the BBC, for whom we performed a live session at the Radio Theatre; one of the tracks from the live session, “The Flight”, can be heard on the EP. We have also performed live on Q Magazine’s radio station.
