MO’CHEDDAH: Nigeria’s Hip-hop Princess

In the year 2008, the Nigerian music industry was introduced to a new musical prodigy: Mo’Cheddah. She grew up in the centre of Lagos, Nigeria, in the hustle and bustle of Fola-Agoro, Akoka (a.k.a. F.A.). As a child, she loved music; lots of times listening to her Dad playing his favorite records and singing along with him. In 2001, she discovered Destiny’s Child and fell in love with Beyonce’s voice. She would sing around the house, sing at school; everywhere. And then in 2002, she hooked up the original members of Knighthouse (who were still just a group) and got involved with recording and then Rap music. Rap for her started as a joke but then people began to really notice her flow, delivery, style and so it began to stick. After a year, due to family pressure, she gave up music and focused on her academic life. But the music wouldn’t go away; no matter how much she tried, she still sang and rapped, missing the comfort of the voice booth, she wrote down her music. During this time, she learnt a lot about herself as a musician and honed her skills, even getting close to other music artists and producers like Freestyle, Frenzy, etc.

In 2007 she graduated from secondary school with good grades and took her university entrance exams. While waiting for her results, she hooked up with Knighthouse again, who by this time had opened their own studio and were making a name for themselves in the music industry.

She recorded a demo song which made waves in her immediate community and that is when she decided that she would get back into music. She spoke to her family, who were in full support and she gained admission into the University of Lagos to study Creative Arts. Unfortunately, disaster struck in 2006 and the same year her career began, was the same year her beloved father died; she was just 15yrs old. This tragedy affected her seriously but she vowed to make his memory proud and worked even harder than before. For 2 years she paid her dues; studying hard in the morning and noon to meet up with her demanding courses requirements, while recording and learning in the studio in the evening. In 2008, her big break came with the Knighthouse Street Scriptures project. On the Vol. 1 album, she recorded tracks with heavyweights like M.I, Saucekid, Kel, Tha Suspect and many more, an amazing feat for an 18 year old. Her commanding presence led to her involvement in the making of a number of videos for the album and once again she proved what she was made of by giving stellar performances in front of the camera as well. These videos are receiving very impressive reviews in local and international media.

Already being called the new hottest female artiste in a long time, her versatility in both rapping and singing have earned her the titles ‘The Hip-Pop Princess’, “The Swagger Diamond’ and the ‘Franchise Celebrity’. Her debut album, expected to be released in the 3rd quarter, is one of the most  anticipated for 2009 and will feature great talent and brilliant collaborations with several African acts such as Pype, Illbliss, M.I, Terry Da Rapman, just to mention a few. The album is being produced by Knighthouse with beats from prolific producers like Dr. Frabs, X-O, Tee-Y Mix, Jesse Jagz, Xela, Beatworx and many more. She is currently putting finishing touches to the first single off her forthcoming album, ‘Franchise Celebrity’. Mo describes herself as a  new age African female and is very passionate about Nigeria and being Nigerian.

Mo who lives alone with her mother speaks both Yoruba and English fluently. She’s the 4th child in a family of 5 children. She is passionate about fashion (often referred to as a ‘fashionista’) and is involved in causes for youth empowerment and abolishment of child labor. Mo is never far away from an orphanage. Being one of the few female pop/hip-hop acts in this part of the world; Mo’Cheddah, ‘Naija’s Hip-pop Princess is ready to take on the world and show off what she’s got….and that is incredible talent and mad swagger.
